Florida Proposed State Legislation
Dear Residents,
We have created this special section on our web page to focus your attention on an extremely critical issue
affecting the public safety of residents and visitors of Florida. Florida, like many states, is experiencing
a challenging economy and a drastic reduction in revenues to fund the operations of our State Government.
My
concern is that reducing the budget of the Florida Department of Corrections (State Prisons) will result in
new laws and programs to release violent criminals early from State prisons. If that is allowed to occur,
you, your family members, and neighbors will see increased violent crimes in your neighborhoods, homes, and
businesses.
Past history in Florida has shown early release of violent criminals to be a real threat. We
have to be vigilant during the upcoming Florida Legislative session as new proposed laws and programs may have
a variety of innocent sounding titles so as to not alarm residents, or to appeal to your emotions dealing with
youthful criminals and elderly inmates. I will personally oppose any such proposed new laws that will increase
violent crime, and want to be sure our citizens are fully informed
of the risks.
I encourage you to also become a part of this effort, and urge you to monitor and act on the
information we display in this section of our web page.
It is an honor to serve as your Sheriff, and to lead the dedicated men and women of your Sheriff's Office.
Sincerely,
Sheriff J. Harrell Reid
